Designed by the Mil bureau in the USSR as a larger
version of the Mil Mi-1, the Mi-2 was assigned to Poland for further
development and production. The Swidnik factory which had been
established in 1951 began production of the Mi-2 in 1965 and the
majority of those built were for the air forces of Eastern Europe. It
has been built in a number of variants for specific roles such as air
ambulance, freighter, agricultural crop sprayer, aerial photography and
passenger transport. A large number remain active in civil markings.
