The extremely successful Saab 340 was a joint project
with Fairchild Industries of the United States and was originally
designated SF.340. Fairchild withdrew from the programme in 1985 and
Saab duly forged ahead with what was to become one of their greatest
successes. The first delivery was to Crossair of Switzerland in 1984.
The early 340’s had been powered by 2x 1630shp(1214kW) General Electrics
but by 1985 were being built with the higher powered 1735shp engines.
Production of the Saab 340A ended in 1989 when the Saab 340B was
introduced.
