Saab J-32B Lansen

The Saab 32 was first flown in prototype form in 1952 and was designed as a replacement for the Saab 18 (242 built) dive bomber which had first flown in 1942 and which was still in service with the Swedish Air Force until 1956. Along with the Saab J-29 the J-32 was the first jet interception equipment for the Swedish Air Force. The Saab A32A (287 built) went into production in 1953 powered by a 9921lb.s.t. (44.14kN) Svenska and entered service in 1956. It was followed by the J-32B, first flown in 1957, and the S-32C (44 built) photo-reconnaissance version which featured a modified nose for cameras and radar surveillance equipment. Production of the Lansen ended in 1960. A number of surplus Lansens were converted into J-32D’s (10 converted) as target tugs and J-32E’s (14 converted) as electronic warfare aircraft. A total of 450 Lansens of all versions were built. The last Lansen was retired from Swedish Air Force service in 1997. Several have been civil registered and a few remain airworthy with one still flying in Sweden.
