The D.140 Mousquetaire prototype was an enlarged
version of the Jodel D.117 Grand Tourisme two seater of which 223
examples had been built by S.A.N. (Societe Aeronautique Normande). This
company was founded by Lucien Querey in 1948 and by the early 1950’s it
was building examples of the designs of Jean Delemontez. The company
built the Jodel D.112 (10 built) a design which was built in large
numbers by other manufacturers including Valladeau and Wassmer. The
first production Mousquetaire was the D.140A (45 built) and this was
followed by the D.140B which featured a redesigned engine cowling and
improved ventilation. The D.140C Mousquetaire 111 (70 built) had a
larger swept fin and this was followed by the D.140E Mousquetaire 1V (43
built) which featured a larger fin. The D.140R Abeille (28 built) was a
glider tug version which first flew in 1965 and which featured a cut
down rear fuselage.
