Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau GmbH has been involved in
glider design and construction since the 1950’s and a number of standard
gliders have been produced in powered form. The Janus CM is the Rotax
powered version of the Janus B glider, the prototype of which was first
flown in 1974. The engine is mounted on a pylon aft of the cockpit and
which retracts rearwards into the fuselage when not in use. The Janus CT
version is powered by a 10hp(7kW) Oehler. Other Schempp-Hirth powered
gliders were the 2 seat Nimbus 3DT which was first flown in 1986 powered
by a 26hp(19kW) Solo and with a maximum take-off weight of
1763lb(800kg). The single seat Nimbus 11M was first flown in 1974
powered by a 50hp(37kW) Hirth and with a maximum take-off weight of
1278lb(580kg). The two seat Nimbus 3DM first flew in 1988 and is powered
by a 60hp(44kW) Rotax and has a maximum take-off weight of
1764lb(800kg). The Ventus 2CM is powered by a 49hp(37kW) Solo 2625.
