Strictly speaking this aircraft should be designated
the American Aircraft Airster S-1B, but the fact that it was evolved
from the earlier Security Airster S-1A has meant that over the years
both versions have been known as Security types. The Security National
Aircraft Corporation of California was formed in 1933 by W.B. Kinner to
build the Airster S-1A (15 built) which he had designed. It was first
flown in 1933 powered by a 100hp(75kW) Kinner but it met with little
success and production ended in 1935. The company was restarted in 1939
under the name American Aircraft Co. and began construction of the more
powerful Airster S-1B. The company ceased trading in 1942 and only one
Model S-1B remains extant and is believed to be maintained in airworthy
condition.
