Taylor J-2 Cub

The Taylor Brothers Aircraft Corporation was founded by C G Taylor and his brother G A Taylor in 1927. The first production type was the two seat Taylor A-2 Chummy which was first flown in 1928 powered by a 90hp(67kW) Kinner. The company went bankrupt in 1929 and was reformed in 1930 as the Taylor Aircraft Company of Pennsylvania, under the leadership of William T Piper. A tandem two seat version of the Chummy was put into production in 1931 as the Taylor E-2 Cub (350 built) powered by a 37hp Continental and with a maximum take-off weight of 925lb(420kg). The Model F-2 Cub (30 built) was first flown in 1934 powered by a 40hp(29kW) Aeromarine and was followed by the Model H-2 (4 built) powered by a 35hp(26kW) Szekely. The Model J-2 was the most successful of the Cub series and when the company was renamed the Piper Aircraft Corporation in 1937, the J-2 formed the basis for the Piper J-3 Cub, of which many thousands were subsequently built. Small numbers of the E-2, F-2 and J-2 models remain airworthy.
