Travel Air was taken over by the Curtiss-Wright
Corporation in 1929 and this company merged with the Curtiss-Robertson
Airplane Manufacturing Company in 1930 to form the Curtiss-Wright
Airplane Company. This company continued to build the Travel Air series
and strictly speaking these should be designated Curtiss- Wright Travel
Airs. To many they are still Travel Airs and we have decided to include
them with the other Travel Air types. The Travel Air 12-W, also known as
the Sport Trainer, was a sporting or training biplane and was also
available as the Model 12-Q (27 built) powered by a 90hp(67kW) Wright
inline engine and which had a maximum take-off weight of 1725lb(783kg).
A very small number remain airworthy.
