The Travel Air 4000 series began with the Model 4000 (50 built) which first flew in 1927 powered by a 220hp(164kW) Wright and with a maximum take-off weight of 2412lb(1095kg). It was similar to the Model 3000 but introduced a radial engine instead of an inline. The Model A-4000 was powered by a 150hp(112kW) Axelson and the Model B-4000 (20 built) was powered by a 220hp Wright and had a maximum take-off weight of 2900lb (1316kg). The Model C-4000 (20 built) was first flown in 1929 powered by a 170hp(126kW) Curtiss and had a maximum take-off weight of 2637lb(1197kg). The D-4000 (17 built) had a shorter wing.The Model K-4000 was powered by a 100hp(75kW) Kinner and the Model W-4000 was powered by a 110hp(82kW) Warner. The Model B9-4000 was powered by a 300hp (224kW) Wright. The Travel Air 8000 was similar and was powered by a 120hp(89kW) Fairchild and the Travel Air 9000 was powered by a 125hp(93kW) Ryan-Siemens. The Travel Air 4D (19 built) was also very similar to the above designs and was powered by a 225hp(167kW) Wright and had a maximum take-off weight of 2880lb (1307kg).
