The Retriever was designed as a general purpose
helicopter for operation with the US Navy. The first production model
was the HUP-1 (32 built) which entered production in 1948 powered by a
525hp(391kW) Continental. They entered service in 1949 and were followed
by the more powerful HUP-2. The HUP-3 (70 built) was an upgraded version
with a strengthened floor and larger cargo doors. The Retriever was
retired from US service in 1963. A small number have been restored to
airworthy condition.
