Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire 1A

The Spitfire was designed by Reginald J Mitchell and is probably the best known aircraft in the history of aviation. The Spitfire 1 entered service with the RAF in 1938 and the designation Mk.1A applied to the majority of those built which were fitted with eight machine guns. A small number were fitted with twin 20mm cannon and were designated Mk.1B. The Spitfire 11A (751 built) and Spitfire 11B (170 built) were powered by a 1175hp (876kW) Rolls-Royce and featured minor improvements. A few examples of the Mk.1A and Mk.11A remain in airworthy condition.
