The Spitfire Mk.1X appeared before the Mk.V11 and
Mk.V111, and was a Mk.V fitted with the latest Rolls-Royce Merlin 60
series engine. 1200 examples were operated by the Soviet Union and the
type was used extensively in North Africa and the Balkans. The Mk.XV1
(1054 built) was powered by a 1720hp(1282kW) Packard but was generally
similar to the Mk.1X although most had "clipped" wings. A small number
of Mk.1X’s and Mk.XV1’s remain airworthy.
