The Spitfire V111 was a general purpose fighter and
along with the Mk.V11 (140 built) represented the first major redesign
of the basic Spitfire design. The airframe was modified to accept the
two stage Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 series engine. The Mk.V111 was built in
three sub-variants, the F.V111 as described above, the HF.V111 high
altitude model powered by a 1710hp(1275kW) Rolls-Royce and the LF.V111
low altitude model powered by a 1720hp(1282kW) Rolls- Royce. Several
Mk.V111’s remain airworthy.
