The Spitfire V series was produced in the largest
numbers of any of the Spitfire variants. A more powerful version of the
earlier Mk.11 it was widely used during World War 11 and served with the
air forces of Australia, United States and the Soviet Union as well as
with the RAF. From 1943 many of the Mk.V’s had their wings "clipped" to
a wingspan of 32’2"(9.8m) in order to enhance low altitude handling.
These were redesignated LF.V’s. The Mk.VC (2467 built) featured the
universal wing which could be fitted with either four 20mm cannon or two
20mm cannon and four machine guns. Examples of the Mk.VB and Mk.VC
remain active.
