In 1966 Wassmer flew the prototype of an all new four
seat light aircraft, the Wassmer WA-50. It was of glass fibre
construction and featured a retractable undercarriage. It entered
production as the WA-51 Pacific which had a fixed undercarriage and a
modified tail. The Wassmer WA-52 Europa (59 built) was a more powerful
version which first flew in 1970 powered by a 160hp(119kW) Lycoming and
with a maximum take-off weight of 2380lb(1080kg). The Wassmer WA-54
Atlantic (55 built) first flew in 1973 powered by a 180hp(134kW)
Lycoming and with a maximum take-off weight of 2447lb (1110kg). The
WA-54 Atlantic had a length of 24’3.5"(7.4m), range of 870miles(1400km)
and a cruising speed of 160mph(257kmh). All three versions proved
popular and examples were exported to a number of countries in Europe.
Examples of the WA-51, WA-52 and WA-54 remain airworthy in Europe, with
around eighteen WA-52 Europas and fourteen WA-54 Atlantics on the French
register alone. A Wassmer WA-52 Europa is illustrated below.
