Westland Aircraft Ltd. decided to enter the Air
Ministry’s two seat Light Aeroplane trials in 1924 and designed the
Widgeon 1 which was a braced high wing tandem two seat monoplane
initially powered by a 35hp(26kW) Blackburn. After an accident it was
rebuilt as the Widgeon 11 powered by a 60hp(45kW) Armstrong Siddeley.
This version proved successful and was put into production as the
Widgeon 111. Some examples which were designated Mk.111A featured a few
structural alterations. Various engines were used including the 75hp
(56kW) Armstrong Siddeley and the 120hp(89kW) Cirrus. The example
illustrated is thought to remain airworthy.
