The Buttercup was designed by the legendary airman
and designer Steve Wittman as an alternative to the Aeroncas and Pipers
which were prevalent in the 1930’s. Unfortunately the advent of World
War 11 prevented the type from entering production and the prototype lay
dormant until wars end. Mr. Wittman used the Buttercup as an
experimental aircraft which he fitted with various combinations of
engines and wings. In the early 1950’s he commenced design work on his
well known Tailwind design and the Buttercup was used as a hack. The
aircraft ended up in the EAA museum at Oshkosh. Steve Wittman died in an
aircraft accident in 1995. Earl Luce of Brockport, New York built a
reproduction of the Buttercup which made its first flight in 2002 and
kits are now available from Luce Air.
