Several Wright Flyer replicas have been built over
the years but few have managed to achieve even a short controlled hop.
The example built by the Wright Redux Association of Glen Ellyn,
Illinois has achieved flight very similar to that of the original Wright
Flyer at Kitty Hawk on December 17th. 1903. This aircraft is an exact
replica down to the engine which was specially built for the project.
The achievements of Orville and Wilbur Wright and particularly the first
powered, manned, controlled and sustained flight in the world by Orville
Wright were not fully recognized until several years later by which time
other early aviators had also made first flights. The American Wright
Company was formed in 1909 and a number of different types were
eventually produced including the Flyer 111 of 1905 which achieved a
distance of 24 miles. The first flight in 1903 had been a distance of
120 feet. The Wright Model A was a two seater powered by a 30hp(22kW)
Wright engine. The company merged with the Glenn L. Martin company to
form the Wright Martin Aircraft Corporation in 1916.
