The Yak-12 was built as a utility aircraft which had
civil and military applications. The original Yak-12 (300* built) was
first flown in 1947 and was a three seater powered by a 160hp(119kW)
Ivchenko. The Yak-12M introduced four seats and a more powerful engine
and led to the definitive Yak-12A (1500* built) which was powered by a
260hp(194kW) Ivchenko and which had a maximum take-off weight of
3501lb(1588kg). The Yak-12A also introduced a new wing with tapered
wingtips, extra cabin windows and a modified tail. The type was built
under licence in Poland and China. There are many hundreds of Yak-12’s
in service in Russia and other Eastern European countries.
