The basic Yak-18 was an updated version of the Yak
UT-2L primary trainer which had first flown in 1943 as an enclosed
cockpit version of the standard UT-2 trainer which had first flown in
1937. It was a fully aerobatic trainer and was operated by 19 countries,
the total built including 379 which were built under licence in China.
The Yak-18U (960 built) was first flown in 1953 and replaced the Yak-18
on the production line in 1954. The main differences were a tricycle
undercarriage and a fuselage length of 27’11"(8.5m). It had a maximum
take-off weight of 2866lb(1300kg). Examples remain airworthy in Eastern
Europe.
