Although based on the Yak-18A, the Yak-18T was a
wholly redesigned aircraft specifically designed for the GVF (Civil
Aviation) as a primary and advanced trainer and light utility transport.
Some of its duties were to be as an air ambulance and mail carrier. The
fuselage was widened and redesigned and the undercarriage was based on
that of the Yak-18PM, although considerably modified with stronger and
longer oleo struts. A baggage compartment was accessed from a door on
the port side behind the cabin. It entered production in 1973 against
large orders for civil and military users including the Philippines Air
Force and remains in production today with the Smolensk Aircraft
factory. It can be operated on floats or skis and in recent years has
become popular with enthusiastic collectors in the United States. Large
numbers remain active in civil markings.
