The AMX attack aircraft
is the result of a requirement by the Italian Air Force to replace the
Fiat G.91. Aermacchi and Alenia made a joint proposal and were
eventually joined by Embraer as the Brazilian Air Force had a similar
requirement. AMX International was formed to co-ordinate the design work
and the first Italian aircraft flew in 1984 with the first Brazilian
aircraft following in 1985.Production began in 1986 and the type entered
service in 1989. The AMX-T is the two seat trainer version which was
first flown in 1990. Italy received 110 AMX and 26 AMX-T aircraft, while
Brazil received 79 AMX (designated A-1A) and 15 AMX-T (designated A-1B).
55 of the Italian AMX aircraft were upgraded beginning in 2005 with more
advanced avionics with the first deliveries in 2007. An Italian Air
Force AMX-T is illustrated below.
