The Stratofortress is the
oldest operational aircraft in the USAF inventory. The prototype made
its first flight in 1952. It entered service with the USAF in 1955 as
the B-52B (50 built). This was followed by the B-52C (35 built), the
B-52D (170 built) and the B-52E (100 built) . The B-52F (89 built) was
powered by improved engines. This was followed by the B-52G (193 built).
The final version was the B-52H (103) which first flew in 1961.
Production ended in June 1962 when a total of 744 Stratofortress
(including prototypes) had been built. About 70 B-52H's remain
operational.
