The IL-76M was originally designed for military use and featured a rear
gun turret and the capacity to carry 140 troops, although its potential
as a civil freighter was quickly realized. The IL-76TD appeared in 1982
and has a maximum take-off weight of 440,925lb(200,000kg). A stretched
military version, the IL-76MF, first flew in 1995 and features more
powerful engines and a 20% increase in range over the IL-76MD.. The
IL-76MD has a 40% increase in range over the IL-76M. The latest version
is the IL-76MD-90 which is fitted with more powerful engines and
improved avionics. Other versions include the IL-76DMP used as a
waterbomber, the IL-76 Phalcon which is an AWACS version operated by the
Indian Air Force and the IL-78MKI in-flight refueler. The IL-76M is
operated by the air forces of most of the former Soviet countries as
well as those of India, China, Jordan, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the
Yemen. Of the total of all models built, around 300 are active in civil
markings. An IL-76MD of the Russian Air Force is illustrated below.
