The P-3C Orion is a
development of the earlier P-3 series which were in turn developed from
the Lockheed L-188 Electra airliner. The prototype YP3V-1 was first
flown in 1959 and the first production version, the P3V-1, made its
first flight in 1961. It entered service with the US Navy in 1962 and
was re-designated P-3A(157 built). The P-3B replaced the P-3A on the
production line with uprated engines. The P-3C (267 built) was first
flown in 1968 and entered service in 1969. Other countries which have
operated the Orion are the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Norway,
Pakistan, Portugal, Japan and Spain. Production of the Orion ended
in 1995 with a total of 649 aircraft of all variants being built. A P-3C
