The prototype YT-38
supersonic trainer was first flown in 1959. It entered service as the
T-38A with the USAF in 1961 and is still operational today. When
production ended in 1972 the USAF had received 1187 examples of the
T-38A. 46 were operated by the Luftwaffe for training in the United
States and 12 were supplied to the Portuguese Air Force. The AT-38B is a
fighter trainer version with weapons hardpoints for practice bombs. Many
T-38A's have undergone upgrading to T-38C standard with improved
avionics. A T-38C is illustrated below.
