The S-61 series of
helicopters began with a US Navy requirement for a new anti-submarine
helicopter. The prototype made its first flight in 1959 and the type
entered production in 1960 as the S-61A. The US military designation was
CH-3A and 251 were built for the US Navy, entering service in 1961. This
early version of the S-61 was also delivered to the Malaysian Air Force
as the S-61A-4 (40 built), the Royal Danish Air Force as the S-61A-1 (9
built) and the Canadian Navy as the CH-124 (41 built). The S-61B was
first flown in 1962 with more powerful engines. An S-61A-1 of the Royal
