The Transall C-160 was
built by the Transporter Allianz group which consisted of Aerospatiale,
MBB and VFW to provide a modern military transport for France and
Germany. The prototype made its first flight in 1963 and the type
entered service with the French Air Force in 1967. The French version
was designated C-160F (50 built) and the German version the C-160D (110
built). Other versions were the C-160T (20 built) for Turkey and
the C-160Z (9 built) for South Africa. The initial production ended in
1972 but was restarted in 1977 with an order from France for the C-160NG
New Generation (36 built) which had upgraded avionics and a longer
range. From 1994 all the remaining French aircraft were updated to
C-160R standard with improved avionics. A total of 205 Transalls of all
versions were built when production ended in 1985. An example of a
