The Skycycle was designed by Robert G. Dart who
formed R.D. Aircraft of Mayville, New York to market plans and kits for
this model. It was followed by the two seat Skycycle 11 which first flew
in 1984 powered by a 35hp(26kW) Cuyuna UL-11. It had an empty weight of
336lb(152kg), maximum take-off weight of 720lb(326kg), range of
170miles(273km) and cruising speed of 45mph(72kmh). Other designs by
R.D. Aircraft included the single seat Skycycle Gipsy which first flew
in 1984 powered by a 27hp(20kW) Rotax 277, the single seat Skycycle
Gipsy 11 which had braced wings. It made its first flight in 1985. The
single seat Skycycle Cabin Gipsy was first flown in 1985 and was
essentially the Gipsy 11 with an enclosed cabin. Small numbers of these
designs were built in the late 1980’s and a few Skycycles remain
airworthy. The similarly named SkyCycle is a trike built by a different
manufacturer.
