Rearwin Aircraft and Engines Inc. was founded by Ray
Rearwin in 1928 to build light touring aircraft , the company’s first
design being the Model 2000C which was a three seat biplane powered by a
170hp(127kW) Curtiss. The Models 3000 and 4000 were built in small
numbers until the arrival of the Model 7000 in 1935. The Sportster
series was built in a number of versions apart from the Model 7000. The
Model 8500 was powered by a 85hp(63kW) Le Blond and had a maximum
take-off weight of 1410lb(640kg), the Model 9000L was powered by a
90hp(67kW) Le Blond and had a maximum take-off weight of 1460lb(662kg),
the Model 9000KR was powered by a 90hp(67kW) Ken Royce and the Model
9000W (10 built) which first flew in 1937 powered by a 90hp(67kW)
Warner. A total of 260 Sportsters of all models were built. Several
examples of the Sportster were built under licence in Sweden prior to
World War Two as the Gotaverken GV-38. One example, SE-AHG c/n 8-860,
survives in airworthy condition. Around 40
Sportsters remain extant with a large proportion of those being maintained
in airworthy condition. A Model 9000L is illustrated below.
