The Rockwell Commander 112 series was designed by the
Aero Commander division of North American Aviation Inc. which merged
with the Rockwell Standard Corp. in 1967. The Model 111A (2 built) was
powered by a 180hp(134kW) Lycoming and had a fixed undercarriage. The
initial production model was the Model 112 (125 built) which first flew
in 1970 powered by a 200hp Lycoming and with a maximum take-off weight
of 2550lb(1157kg). The Model 112A had a strengthened structure and was
followed by the Model 112B (44 built) introduced in 1977 and which
featured a wingspan of 35’7"(10.84m), new propeller and improved
soundproofing. The Model 112TC (109 built) was introduced in 1976
powered by a 210hp (156kW) Turbo Lycoming allowing for a cruising speed
of 165mph (265kmh). The Model 112TC-A (160 built) was introduced in 1979
and had a maximum take-off weight of 2950lb (1339kg). This was renamed
the Alpine Commander. Production of the Model 112’s ended in 1980. Large
numbers remain airworthy. The Model 114 (388 built) was introduced in
1976 powered by a 260hp(194kW) Lycoming and with a maximum take-off
weight of 3140lb (1425kg). The Model 114A (41 built) was equivalent to
the Model 112B with the 260hp engine. It was later marketed as the Gran
Turismo Commander. The Model 114B (80 built) was introduced in 1977 and
featured a redesigned engine cowling. Production ended in 1979.
